James E. Cox tested and videotaped the forces generated by his six-gap toroidal spark engine. He found it created a short-lived, high-pressure plasma pulse capable of producing dramatic effects. This is a continuation of his work which was presented in ESJ 5 (?Toroidal Spark Gap Engine,? pp. 6-10).

In US Patent #4,663,932, dated May 12, 1987, James E. Cox describes a method for alternating magnetic and electric fields to spin polarized particles. He concludes that electrically-neutral, polarized gases can be accelerated for thrust. The mechanism has been likened to the Hall effect.

Large electromagnetic thrusts in air can be obtained from the discharge of advanced capacitors into a toroidal spark gap engine (TSGE). Details of how to build a small model are presented. A fully-developed, air-breathing TSGE pulse-jet could launch a small delta wing vehicle into earth orbit, powered from a concentrated solar beam generator located and operating already in Barstow, California. Many technical issues must be addressed, such as thermal management, the existence of waste solar heat on the vehicle, and improving engine performance.
