Electrical Engineer(Nuclear Structure)JOHN FRANK JOHNSON grew up and graduated from high school in Tazewell, Virginia. After one year at Bluefield College he enlisted in the Army and won a competitive appointment to West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1943 with a B.S. degree and was sent to Radar School at Harvard and M.I.T. There followed a three-year assignment as instructor in the Electricity Department at West Point. He then attended the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania for two years and earned the degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. The Army kept him in technical assignments. He served as a guided missile test officer on the Army Field Forces Board #4 engaged in early guided missile tests at White Sands Proving Ground. He was assigned to the Pentagon for three years as project officer for NIKE Ajax and NIKE Hercules Missiles. He was then assigned to the Ordinance Division of Headquarters U.S. Army Europe as senior Ordinance planner for the initial deployment of guided missiles and special warheads to Europe. Following the European assignment and a year at the Command and General Staff School, he was again assigned to the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief of R&D and was assigned to the NIKE Zeus program. In addition to program management duties he served as U.S. Army Member of the U.S.-U.K.-Canada Tripartite Technical Sub-Group for Ballistic Missile Defense. Mr. Johnson took a twenty-year retirement from the Army in 1960 to pursue a career in industry. He initially joined AMF as a Engineering Manager but soon joined Keltec Industries and became Chief Engineer of this company engaged in phased-array antenna development; in the manufacture of radar transponders for missiles; in the manufacture of radio receivers; and in the development of solar power supply arrays for satellites. He became President of Keltec Industries, which was acquired by Aiken Industries, and he became a Vice President of Aiken Industries. He joined the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation in 1968 and became a division vice president of ITT Avionics Division engaged in design and manufacture of navigation equipment (TACAN, LORAN, and OMEGA) and electronic warfare systems including penetration aids for the B-52 aircraft. In 1973 he was assigned as Division President of the Electro-Optical Products Division of ITT, a company engaged in the development and manufacture of night vision equipment. Also during his tenure at this Division, the Division had the lead role in the development of the ITT fiber optics capability including the development of fiber, of gallium arsenide laser light sources, associated electronics, and cabling techniques. In 1979 he was given command of the North Electric Group of ITT. This group of companies was engaged in development and deployment of commercial telephone central office switching equipment (both electronic and electro-mechanical and both digital and analog); in the development and manufacture of telephone transmission equipment; and in the manufacture of components for switching and transmission equipment. Mr. Johnson became a Corporate Vice President of ITT. He retired in 1982 to Roanoke, Virginia.
John Frank Johnson, an electrical engineer who worked in the American Armed Forces and later in industry, upon retirement, decided to devote his time to the foundations of electrodynamics. This project led him to write four books. John\'s wife is Elizabeth.
