William Thompson trained in physics and astrogeophysics and spent 25 years in research and development in relation to the acquisition of government electronic systems. He then performed various systems engineering activities in support of government electronic communication, navigation, and surveillance systems for the next 20 years. span> He is currently retired.

Education:
William Thompson holds a bachelors degree with honors in physics from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. He holds a masters degree from the University of Colorado Boulder in astrogeophysics.

Professional Background:
Early in his career he analyzed solar data bearing on the Kippenhahn-Schl?ter solar quiescent prominence model which supposes a magnetic mechanism for their support. He has conducted research on the transmission properties of the earth's ionosphere at L-band frequencies, 1,550 MHz, in anticipation of the deployment of satellite-based navigation systems with what became the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System [GPS]. He has performed independent research and development on the propagation characteristics of the earth's ionosphere and novel methods of deploying meteor burst communication (MBC) systems in the very high frequency (VHF) band at 40 MHz.

Avocationally he has been interested in the catastrophic nature of the solar system and published two papers in the 1970s.

 

Personal:

Mr. Thompson is married to Diane Thompson and they have four adult children: Carrie Efinger, Kristin Franger, Heather Fetterly, and William I. Thompson IV.  They have ten grandchildren.
